Course Overview:

This course is designed for educators who are interested in learning more about how to support English Language Learners (ELLs).

The course draws upon recent publications, current scholarly articles, web based resources and video material that focus on a particular module’s topic. Each module also contains a choice of application tasks that will help teachers use key concepts and practical strategies to support ELLs.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participate in an ELL experience and come to know more about these students and their families.
  • Explore fundamental language concepts as well as the process of language acquisition as a way to analyze your own use of language in the classroom and support student’s language development in English.
  • Develop a working knowledge of the factors that affect ELL students’ learning of academic content, language, and culture.
  • Survey teaching methods that support ELL students and use this knowledge to plan effective, developmentally appropriate instruction that provides opportunities for formative assessment of content and language goals and consider ways to use findings to make instructional decisions.
  • Use an ELL lesson plan supplement and adapt an existing lesson to better meet the needs of ELLs.
  • Establish a professional network with other educators interested in supporting ELLs.
  • Engage in resource sharing and collaborative problem solving.
